Zenviron has been awarded a significant contract with EnergyAustralia to deliver the balance-of-plant works for the Wooreen Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Latrobe Valley, a project which will support Victoria’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

The 4hour, 350 MW capacity, utility-grade battery storage facility will play a critical role in securing the state’s energy supply and supporting the growth of renewable energy across the state.

The Wooreen BESS will be one of the largest energy storage systems in the region and will ensure that excess renewable energy can be stored and dispatched when needed most, particularly during peak demand periods. It is expected to be operational in late 2026, with the capability of powering 230,000 homes over a four-hour period before needing to be recharged.

Zenviron has secured a contract for the delivery of the balance-of-plant design, construction, installation and commissioning for the project.

Zenviron joined EnergyAustralia and Hon. Lily D'Ambrosio on Friday 28 March to celebrate a major milestone with the official turning of the sod for the project.

Carl Keating, Zenviron’s Chief Executive Officer, said that the Company is delighted to be working with EnergyAustralia to grow Victoria’s renewable energy capacity.

“We’re proud to play a role in strengthening the state’s renewable energy future and look forward to working closely with the local community and businesses throughout the project,” he said.

“This important development marks another step forward in providing vital grid stability and building a cleaner, more resilient energy system.”

Located adjacent to EnergyAustralia’s Jeeralang gas-fired power station at Hazelwood North in the Latrobe Valley, the project has been named in honour of the Gunaikurnai Elders. The Elders gifted the name “Wooreen,” which means “light” in the local language, reflecting the project’s role in lighting the path toward a sustainable energy future for the region and beyond.

The project will also provide an economic boost to the Gippsland region, set to create new local jobs during construction and operation.
